Hysteroscopy

A procedure to diagnose and treat conditions of the uterus and cervix

Hysteroscopy is used to diagnose and treat conditions of the uterus and cervix. Our San Antonio OBGYNs use a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope, which is passed through the cervix and into the uterus. A tiny camera at the end of the tube provides the doctor with images of areas that would otherwise not be visible.

What conditions can be treated with hysteroscopy?

The camera on the hysteroscope projects detailed images of the cervix, the inside of the uterus, and the openings of the fallopian tubes. In addition to providing images, the hysteroscope has instruments that can be used for multiple purposes.

  • Find and remove polyps or fibroids
  • Take a biopsy (tissue sample)
  • Treat abnormal bleeding
  • Remove an IUD (intrauterine device)
  • Perform tubal ligation (tie tubes)
  • Identify potential causes of recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Remove scar tissue or adhesions

What to expect with the procedure

Hysteroscopy is typically performed in the OBGYN’s office, but can also be done in an outpatient surgery center. Anesthesia or sedatives may be used, depending on whether additional diagnostic or operative procedures, such as biopsy, will be done during the examination.

Like a pelvic exam, a woman lies back with her feet in stirrups, and the doctor inserts a speculum into the vagina. The physician then passes the hysteroscope into the vagina, through the cervix, and into the uterus. The doctor will inject liquid, such as saline, or gas, through the hysteroscope to expand the uterus and improve visibility.

Using the camera images, the OBGYN will do a thorough visual examination to identify potential conditions of the uterus, cervix and openings of the fallopian tubes. At that time, the same hysteroscope can be used to take tissue samples for testing, remove polyps or fibroids, or perform other procedures if necessary.

Recovery time after a hysteroscopy is brief. A woman may experience gas and discomfort for a day, as well as cramping and bleeding for one to two days.
