Labor and Delivery

Supporting our patients in bringing new life into the world during labor and delivery

Most parents are eager to know what to expect from labor and delivery. However, childbirth is unique for each parent and each pregnancy. Most patients can expect to experience the general stages of labor, though.

At Heights Obstetrics & Gynecology, our San Antonio OBGYNs are here to help you through every stage of your pregnancy. Our doctors will help prepare you for the journey ahead with prenatal care and support. Then, when it’s time to welcome your baby, our team will be there to care for both of you.

To help you prepare for labor and delivery, our doctors are explaining the stages of labor. We’re also highlighting what to expect when you turn to our doctors for obstetrics care.

What are the stages of labor?

Labor begins when you first feel contractions and ends with the delivery of your baby and the placenta. Our San Antonio OBGYNs will guide you through the following stages of labor.

The first stage of labor involves early labor, and then active labor. As you progress, you’ll notice more intense and frequent contractions as your cervix dilates. During this stage of labor and delivery, our goal is to keep you safe and as comfortable as possible. We offer different pain medications, including epidurals, and pain management techniques.

The second stage of labor is when you begin pushing to deliver your baby. This process can range from a few minutes to a few hours. With our team guiding you, you’ll know exactly when to push. We will also carefully monitor you and your baby to promote a successful delivery.

The third stage of labor occurs when you deliver the placenta that nourished your baby during pregnancy. The placenta delivery typically happens within 30 minutes of your baby being born. You may notice mild contractions, or you may not notice much at all.

Through every stage, our San Antonio OBGYNs will keep you and your baby’s comfort and safety in mind. Our goal is to help you have a successful and memorable delivery.
