Discover what to pack in your hospital bag for you and your baby

Getting ready for the arrival of a new baby requires a lot of planning and preparation. After you decorate the nursery and stock up on baby gear, it’s time to think about what to pack in your hospital bag. This is one of the most important tasks of the third trimester.

At one or more of your prenatal care appointments at Heights Obstetrics & Gynecology, your provider will likely talk to you about packing your hospital bag. To ensure you have everything you need (and nothing you don’t), our San Antonio OBGYNs are sharing a list of hospital essentials for mom and baby.

What are hospital essentials for mom and baby?

You’re not alone if you’re wondering what to pack in your hospital bag. Many expectant mothers have the same question. The first step to answering this question is thinking about how long you’ll be in the hospital.

  • If you have a vaginal birth, you will likely stay in the hospital for one to two days.
  • A C-section birth often comes with a hospital stay of two to four days.

While it’s not always possible to predict whether you’ll need a C-section, keeping these guidelines in mind can be helpful.

The next step is thinking about the essentials for you and your baby. Below are lists of must-have items for your hospital bag.

Hospital Bag Essentials for Mom

  • Photo ID and insurance information
  • Birth plan
  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Earbuds
  • Several pairs of comfy socks
  • Comfy pajamas
  • Sweater or robe
  • Maternity bras and nursing pads
  • Preferred pillow
  • Essential medications and toiletries, including glasses or contacts
  • Lip balm
  • Ponytail holder or headband
  • Comfortable clothes for going home

Hospital Bag Essentials for Baby

  • Approved car seat
  • Snap undershirts
  • Going-home outfit and hat
  • Blanket
  • Baby memory book

You typically don’t need to bring diapers or pads for postpartum bleeding. The hospital generally will provide these items during your stay.

Wondering when to pack your hospital bag? Our San Antonio OBGYNs recommend packing it no later than 37 to 38 weeks of pregnancy. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you should put together the essentials by 35 weeks of pregnancy.
